I've seen leather bags get spotting if water is allowed to soak in. Your best bet is to protect your leather item before using it. Clean, condition and spray it with a waterproof spray. I trust Collonil Nanopro.
You can get get leather/fabric waterproof sprays at bag shops, outdoor sports, and also in the car section of the hardware store. Some say to make sure the formula is silicone free.

clean water spottig in leather.
1. Blot up as much of the liquid with a soft cloth as quickly as possible if the leather is still wet.
2.Apply a small amount of moisturizing soap to a clean, soft, slightly damp cloth. Do not overwet the cloth, as this may cause further staining on the leather.
3.Rub gently onto the water mark in a circular motion.
4.Follow by rubbing gently with a clean, slightly damp cloth to remove the soap.
5.Blot the area on the leather dry with a clean, soft cloth. Allow the purse to air-dry completely.
