Default Learning to use graphics software: Tips & Tricks?

Took my first steps today in learning how to create transparent backgrounds of existing pics and then to layer them into a new composite picture. I used Pixelmator, which is especially good for Macs. I understand any inexpensive or free graphics software will serve.

Tickled with the result, but struggled quite a bit with the mechanics of layering. My success at this point had more to do with luck than skill!

My particular difficulties related to how to make a layer active, and objects within that layer movable.

Well I started with Photo Explosion 3.0 it was good for a beginner. I use Photoshop Elements 9 now. I thought it was going to be hard for me because PS was so advanced but I adapted quickly. I do hate that I can't do any glitter though.

This is something I did. This was a banner for another board. It features Sebastian from the dark-hunter series

I also use a lot of free photo editing sites. here are some:

    Picmonkey
    Ribbet
    fixlr
    lunapic
    free online photo editor.com

I've never used Pixelmator so I'm not sure about them. You might need to hit up You tube.
