Wax paper on cabinet tops - does it work?

I read that putting wax paper on top of cabinet or closet systems would eliminate grime and kitchen grease. All you have to do is throw out paper an replace vice scrubbing. Has anyone tried this?

This is quite an old thread but thought I'd reply to this anyway. I put an old newspaper sheet on top of my refrigerator and yes it does keep grime from building up on the surface.
