Default Leather Hand Bag - Wear & Tear

Does anyone know how to protect a leather hand bag from the wear and tear associated with opening the top flap that is closed with a metal clasp (not sure if that's what its called so see picture below). I've noticed this tends to appear over a period of time (normally 6 months for me) with a purse that I consider a favorite.

The leather tends to tear or crease from the stress of pulling the two magnetic pieces apart when I open the purse. I was hoping someone knew of a solution that might make my purses last longer since I hate having to buy a new one when I found one I love.

Don't know if it'll help, but it may be caused by the strength of the two magnets that enable the purse to close. Try cutting a piece of cellophane tape {i.e scotch tape} the same size as the metal clasp, and place the tape to cover the clasp. the tape will ease the grip of the magnet clasp. but should still allow the purse to securely close.
