Amazon and Kindle for PC/Mac - problems
Update (January 7th 2023):
Amazon has made a change to their service.
Books published January 3rd 2023 and newer can NO longer be downloaded using Kindle for PC versions prior to 1.39.
This means that for now for deDRM purposes you can use option 2. described in this post.
Some mebers lately have problems with converting ebooks from Amazon, so here are few possible steps to help with it:
(in case I forgot something feel free to add
)
1. Kindle for PC/Mac
When downloading your books from Amazon through the Kindle for PC/Mac,ebooks are saved in the "My Kindle Content" folder.
From that folder you copy/move ebook in Calibre so that DRM can be removed and ebook converted in some other preferable format.
Please be aware that standard option selected in Kindle for PC/Mac is Automatically Install updates, and that Amazon recently started to use new KFX ebook format so that is the format in which some books will be downloaded.
So, you probably have updated version of Kindle for PC/Mac that will automaticaly download KFX format for witch there is no de-DRM tool yet.
The solution to this problem is following:
- delete the file that you cannot convert
1. uninstall latest Kindle for PC/Mac from your computer
2. download and install (older) version
1.17 of Kindle for PC (63.60 MB) >> https://workupload.com/file/t4xw6tfFLTA
1.17 of Kindle for Mac (115 MB) >> https://workupload.com/file/tN8ZtUzC6pA
3. go to Menu > Tools > Options> General and uncheck "Automatically install updates when they are available without asking me."
4. download your book and import into calibre
2. download books directly from Amazon
If you have an e-ink (not sure if this works with other types of devices) Kindle device registered to your Amazon account you have the option of downloading books directly from Amazon. And that way you can download azw format and not the new one.
1. choose book you want to buy
2. before you click on the button Buy now chosse from drop down menu Deliver to > Transfer via Computer
3. save on computer
4. move in calibre and do your thing
or
1. go to Account & Lists > Manage Your Content and Devices
2. find a book and press the "..." button in the Actions column for that book
3. choose > Download & transfer via USB
4. select the name of your registered kindle device in the drop down menu and press Download button
5. save on your PC/Mac
6. move in calibre and do your thing

Up and down ever after, sometimes rocky ever after, crazy ever after — I don’t give a sh**.
As long as you stick around, we’ll just do the best we can, day after day.”
